Welcome Back to La Rochelle’s Enchanted Coastline
Following a delightful weekend in La Rochelle, crowned by an exquisite culinary experience at Coutanceau, our journey did not end there. The next leg of our road trip led us to the serene yet sophisticated La Grande Terrasse in Châtelaillon-Plage, a hidden gem on the French Atlantic coast that seamlessly blends comfort, cuisine, and captivating scenery. And yes, #Woody, our beloved canine companion, was more than welcome here—a big win for any dog-loving traveler!

Dog-Friendly Delights and Ocean Views
When selecting a hotel, it’s essential to find a balance between pet-friendliness and a level of comfort that meets our human standards. La Grande Terrasse exceeded expectations. We were particularly impressed with the spacious rooms on the ground floor, which not only accommodated #Woody comfortably but also provided direct access to a lush garden. This garden opened up to a breathtaking view of the ocean, allowing us all to enjoy the cool Atlantic breeze and stunning sunsets without leaving our room.

Gastronomic Excellence at Gaya Pierre Gagnaire
As seasoned travelers and connaisseurs of fine dining, the highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the gastronomic experience at Gaya Pierre Gagnaire. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a menu that was both inventive and grounded in the rich culinary traditions of the region.
We started with a series of appetizers that showcased the chef’s mastery of flavor and texture. The tomato water with tarragon and accompanying tomato soup were a delightful interplay of sweet and savory, with fresh raspberry puree and roasted hazelnuts adding unexpected yet harmonious notes.

The zucchini soup with verbena and chanterelles was a testament to the beauty of simplicity, each ingredient shining in its own right while complementing the others. However, it was the langoustines rosette with champagne and fresh grapes that stole the show. The dish was a moment of pure culinary bliss, leaving us both speechless and eager for the next course.

The menu continued to impress with its seafood selections, including a wild turbot breast brushed with orange juice and turmeric, and an escabeche of sardines. The culmination of the meal was the farm calf dish, elevated by the addition of white summer truffle and golden sweetbreads—a true masterpiece of French cuisine. And of course, the great Pierre Gagnaire dessert provided a fittingly indulgent conclusion to our dining experience.

Beyond the food, the restaurant’s ambiance enhanced the experience. Dining with a view of the setting sun over the ocean added a magical quality to each meal, making every evening unforgettable.

Casual Dining and Everyday Comforts
While the gastronomic restaurant was the highlight, the hotel’s more casual dining options did not disappoint. The regular restaurant offered a variety of bistronomic dishes, consistently delivering on quality and flavor throughout our stay. Whether for lunch or dinner, we found ourselves looking forward to each meal, knowing it would be both satisfying and delicious.

Breakfast, though not extraordinary, was a well-stocked buffet typical of four-star ACCOR hotels—ample enough to start the day on a good note. However, it was the convenience and consistency of the dining options that added to the overall positive experience, ensuring that each day began and ended with culinary contentment.

Exploring the Charente-Maritime: A Week Well Spent
Spending a week at La Grande Terrasse provided the perfect opportunity to explore the surrounding region. We ventured to Oleron Island, Rochefort, and Re Island, each offering its unique charm and attractions. The diversity of the landscapes—from the rugged coastline to the quaint small towns—made our daily excursions with Woody both exciting and rewarding.
The hotel’s location also facilitated long walks along the beach, where Woody could roam freely while we soaked in the tranquil environment. Each town we visited had its character, offering everything from historical sights to charming cafes where we could relax and enjoy the local atmosphere.

Spa Indulgence and Electric Convenience
Isabelle took advantage of the hotel’s spa that left her feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. While there are no photos to share, her glowing review says it all—this is a must-visit for anyone looking to unwind and pamper themselves during their stay.
One of the practical perks of staying at La Grande Terrasse was the availability of free refills for our car batteries. This convenience made our explorations stress-free, allowing us to travel with ease throughout the region without worrying about charging stops.
Final Thoughts: A Week to Remember
La Grande Terrasse in Châtelaillon-Plage proved to be an excellent choice for our week-long getaway. The combination of pet-friendly accommodations, superb dining, and the beautiful surrounding region made for a memorable experience. The lack of 24/7 in-room dining and the standard breakfast buffet were minor inconveniences in an otherwise perfect stay.
For anyone considering a trip to this part of France, I can confidently say that La Grande Terrasse is money well spent. Whether you’re a foodie, a nature lover, or simply in need of a relaxing escape, this hotel and its surroundings have something to offer. It’s a destination that leaves you refreshed, inspired, and eager to return.
