Our 3 Favorite Food Experiences in Washington, D.C.

Our recent escape to Washington, D.C., wasn’t just about monuments and museums—it became a culinary tour we won’t soon forget. Among the many meals we enjoyed, three restaurants stood out as true highlights of our stay. Each offered a unique experience: French elegance, Spanish flair, and comforting Italian warmth. Here’s a look at the spots that made our taste buds travel as much as we did.

1. Bistro Cacao – French Flavors with a D.C. Twist

Hidden away in a charming corner near Capitol Hill, Bistro Cacao offers a quiet retreat from the city buzz, wrapped in an ambiance that’s both refined and relaxed. With rich colors, soft lighting, and plush seating, it strikes a perfect balance between classic bistro charm and inviting comfort.

We went there on a recommendation from our son (thank you again!), and it was a hit. The menu leans into French cuisine but with a subtle American influence—approachable yet elegant. We shared a smooth, well-prepared soup to start, followed by a flaky fish dish and a satisfying steak. Every plate was fresh, flavorful, and just as we hoped. Even the dessert lived up to the standard, rounding off what felt like a cozy dinner in a friend’s upscale Parisian apartment. If you’re looking for a serene place to enjoy solid French food, this one is a sure bet.

2. The Bazaar by José Andrés – Tapas, Elevated

Our second culinary stop was a full-on experience: The Bazaar by José Andrés, inside the beautiful Waldorf Astoria. From the moment you step in, the design and energy transport you to a place where food becomes performance. This is not your usual dinner—it’s an exploration of flavor, creativity, and presentation.

We dove into a selection of tapas-style dishes, and every single one had its moment. The onion soup? Unexpected and refined. The foie gras? Pure decadence. Brussels sprouts and Iberian ham? Elevated to an art form. What stood out the most was the attention to detail, both in taste and visual storytelling. It’s the kind of place where you linger longer, take too many photos, and happily savor every bite. Yes, it’s a splurge—but for those who enjoy bold, modern takes on Spanish cuisine, it’s absolutely worth it.

3. Claudio’s Table – Homey Italian with Heart

Our third pick couldn’t be more different—and that’s part of the charm. Claudio’s Table is all about warmth, honesty, and the kind of Italian food that makes you feel like part of the family. The open kitchen, the casual setting, and the welcoming staff all set the tone for a meal that’s more about heart than hype.

From the first bite of antipasti to the last spoonful of dessert, everything was fresh, flavorful, and made with genuine care. We tried handmade pasta, a crisp pizza, and a comforting risotto—all the classics, done right. It’s the kind of place where the chef’s European roots shine through in every dish, yet it still feels grounded and accessible. No frills, just great food and an authentic vibe that made us want to come back before we’d even finished our meal.

These three spots each gave us something different, but all were memorable in their own way. Whether you’re in the mood for French finesse, Spanish innovation, or rustic Italian comfort, Washington, D.C. has something delicious waiting for you. And yes, if you followed along on Facebook, you already got a sneak peek—but stay tuned for our next post featuring the hotel that tied it all together as our perfect base for the trip.

Until the next adventure, buon appetito!
