If there’s one thing expatriation keeps teaching us, it’s that life doesn’t always follow the script. April was supposed to be a vibrant, travel-filled chapter. Instead, it became a month frame, quite literally, by visits to FV Hospital. Not exactly the storyline we had in mind, but one that reminded us how resilience, community, and small joys define the expat journey just as much as adventure does.
Between Two Hospital Visits
The month opened on an unexpected note when Isabelle suffered a deep cut, sending us straight to the Emergency Room at FV Hospital. Fortunately, after a stressful few hours, we were able to return home the same night. What followed were weekly check-ups, never quite dramatic, but enough to keep us anchored close to home.

Just as things were settling, April decided to close on a similar tone. My mum had a serious fall in the park, resulting in a broken heel. Another late-night visit to the same emergency room, followed by two days of hospitalisation and the start of a six-week rehabilitation journey. Not quite the April we envisioned but a powerful reminder of the quality of healthcare available here and the professionalism of the teams who supported us through both situations.

A Celebration to Remember
Amidst these challenges, we had the privilege of experiencing something truly special: our very first Vietnamese wedding. Hosted at Asiana Plaza Binh Thanh, the event was nothing short of spectacular.
Vietnamese weddings are a vibrant blend of tradition and modern celebration. From the elegant setting to the lively entertainment and generous banquet-style dining, everything felt both grand and deeply personal. The energy in the room was contagious, filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt moments. It was an honour to be part of such a meaningful day, and we left with wonderful memories and a newfound appreciation for how celebrations are experienced here. Wishing the happy couple all the best for their future together ❤️

A Taste of Belgium… in District 7
When you live abroad, certain places become more than just venues they become anchors. That’s exactly what Belgo Belgian Craft Beer Brewery District 7 represents for us.

This month, we went to the District 7 location with friends, and once again, it delivered exactly what we needed: familiarity, warmth, and a sense of home. The Belgian classics, the relaxed atmosphere, and the easy conversations made for a perfect evening. It raised a simple question, why even consider changing districts when you’ve already found your spot? Sometimes, comfort wins over curiosity, and that’s perfectly fine.

Work, Momentum, and Milestones
On the professional side, April was intense but in a good way. Budget cycle, goals setting, and team adjustments kept the pace high. These are the moments where leadership is tested, but also where progress becomes tangible.

All of this unfolded alongside a major highlight at RMIT Vietnam: a full week dedicated to graduation ceremonies. Thousands of young adults celebrating years of effort and stepping into their future, it’s hard not to feel energised in such an environment. The atmosphere was electric, filled with optimism and ambition, a reminder of why we do what we do.

Learning (and Struggling) with Vietnamese
Somewhere between hospital visits and work commitments, Isabelle and I have been pursuing Vietnamese language classes. And let’s be honest, it’s tough.

Transitioning from French or English to Vietnamese is a real challenge, especially with tones and pronunciation that completely reshape how you think about language. With an exam coming up in May, confidence is… moderate at best. But like everything else this month, it’s about persistence. Progress may be slow, but it’s happening.
Plans Paused, Not Cancelled
One of the biggest disappointments this month was having to cancel our long weekend in Hanoi, including a stay at the iconic Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi and a dining experience at Le Beaulieu.

That said, credit where it’s due, the understanding and flexibility shown by Vietnam Airlines and the hospitality teams made a stressful situation much easier to manage. It’s these gestures that leave a lasting impression. Hanoi isn’t going anywhere, and we’ll definitely reschedule this escape soon.
Meanwhile… Woody’s Holiday Continues
While we stayed grounded, one member of the family still enjoyed a change of scenery. Woody happily returned to his usual retreat at Camp Canine, his own version of a holiday camp. Safe, playful, and familiar, it’s reassuring to know he’s just as well taken care of when we need to focus on other priorities.

Final Thoughts
April didn’t bring the travels or discoveries we expected, but it delivered something equally valuable: perspective. Health, support systems, friendships, and small pockets of joy became the highlights of the month.
Expat life isn’t always about exploration—it’s also about adaptation. And sometimes, staying still teaches you just as much as moving forward.
