Turning the Page: Redefining My New Normal with a 10-Day Trip to Malaysia

Change often arrives when you least expect it. After a significant reorganisation in my company, I found myself at a crossroads, eager to redefine my “new normal.” What better way to mark this transition than by reconnecting with friends and former colleagues on a 10-day trip to Malaysia?

Funny enough, this trip wasn’t even in the original plans. I had initially set my sights on Dubai for a business-focused meet-up with a friend. That was until a spontaneous weekend in Amsterdam last September, where friends from Malaysia were visiting. We had such a heartwarming reunion that they invited us back to Malaysia for the year-end. Dubai plans were swiftly canceled, and Kuala Lumpur (KL) became the new destination.

It turned out to be the perfect decision — not just for the food and memories but for reconnecting with the personal values and relationships that truly matter. Here’s a glimpse into this unforgettable trip, with plenty of good food, laughter, and reflections on friendship and the beauty of shared moments.

Day 1 – A Hidden Gem in KL

The adventure kicked off with a dinner at Shin Ong Lai restaurant, all thanks to our wonderful friends Ai Lin and Chit for the warm invitation. It’s one of those cozy places you’d never find without a local’s recommendation, and wow, what an introduction back to Malaysia!

The food? Incredible. The company? Even better. So much so that we completely forgot about the jet lag — a sign you’re truly in good hands.

Day 2 – A Nostalgic Dinner in Subang Jaya

The next evening took us to Tasty Chapati for a delightful dinner hosted by Shahnaz and his lovely wife. More than just a meal, it was a journey back in time, filled with stories from the past that made us smile and reflect.

The Indian cuisine was nothing short of spectacular, with bold flavors and a perfectly balanced spice blend. But beyond the dishes, it was the warmth of old friends that made the evening so special.

Day 3 – A Taste of Nyonya and a Visit to TRX Mall

To mix things up, we opted for lunch this time and visited Tau Ke for an unforgettable Nyonya feast. Huge thanks to Ming Eie and Wai Meng for this treat! The flavors were rich and vibrant, reminding us why Malaysian food culture is second to none.

After the meal, we explored the brand-new TRX Mall, which left us in awe with its modern design and impressive underground parking setup — a definite highlight for any driver navigating KL!

Mont Kiara: Back to Where It All Started

Dinner took us back to The Regent in Mont Kiara, our old neighborhood. This spot didn’t even exist back when we were living there, yet it felt so natural being back. Ai Lin and Chit once again made the evening memorable with wonderful conversations and great food.

KL has grown so much, but the kindness of friends and the joy of sharing a meal together haven’t changed.

Sentiments at Rakuzen

A heartfelt thank you to Irene and Francis for a beautiful lunch at Rakuzen in Gardens Mall. The food was fresh and expertly crafted, but what made it extraordinary was the conversation — heartfelt stories about friends and former colleagues, reminding us how valuable friendships truly are.

Dim Sum Delights at Xin Cuisine

No trip to Malaysia would be complete without dim sum, and Xin Cuisine delivered on all fronts — mouthwatering dishes, a beautiful atmosphere, and amicable service.

The spread was delicious, but the real treat was being able to share it with our hosts and friends who made every moment unforgettable.

More Culinary Highlights and Heartfelt Moments

The rest of the trip was a continuous celebration of friendship and food:

• Coffee meetups with friends who took the time to catch up.

• A homemade New Year’s Eve dinner lovingly prepared by our hosts.

• A casual yet memorable meal at Le Shrimp Noodle Bar.

• Breakfast at a local food court, where simple dishes brought back fond memories.

• Bangsar Venicia, where the vibrant atmosphere made our dinner even more enjoyable.

Reflections: Food, Culture, and Connection

As you can see, food was at the heart of this journey — but it was never just about the dishes. Malaysian culture beautifully intertwines food with social connection. Despite the disruptions of COVID-19, the culture of sharing meals and cherishing friendships remains unchanged. Food is not just nourishment here; it’s a language of care, hospitality, and community.

This trip wasn’t just a break from routine; it was a reminder of the importance of human connections in times of personal and professional transformation. Sometimes, turning the page means stepping back to appreciate the relationships that ground us and the shared experiences that remind us of who we are.

So, don’t be surprised if you see me back in Malaysia sooner than expected — and next time, I’ll be sure to bring even more stories (and food pics) along!

Cheers to new chapters, old friends, and the unforgettable flavors of Malaysia!
