Chapter 75: A Year of Transformation: From Recovery to a New Chapter Abroad

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since I last opened up about my health. Back in what I called Chapter 74, life was about facing challenges and redefining priorities. Today, looking back on the second half of 2024 and the first months of 2025, I realize how much this journey has shaped me — and how ready I am to embrace the next chapter.

2024: The Road Back

The second half of 2024 was all about regaining balance. I returned to work part-time, eager to see if there were still opportunities for me following the latest reorganization. It wasn’t an easy process. There were long conversations, deep reflections, and guidance from family and trusted colleagues.

Eventually, I decided to apply for roles that aligned with my experience. Unfortunately, none of those opportunities materialized — not in Belgium, and not through the few remaining expat options. In my farewell post, A Farewell to Shell: Reflecting on 36 Years of Growth, Change, and Unforgettable Experiences, I shared how thankful I felt despite the outcome.

2024 became a year of closure and preparation — a journey toward something new.

2025: Opening New Doors

When the calendar turned to 2025, the focus shifted. I launched SDB Plus as a company, opening the door to new opportunities. At the same time, I enrolled in a coaching program at Coaching Ways Belgium, an experience that allowed me to meet incredible people in a truly positive environment.

Unfortunately, I had to step away before completing the program — for reasons I’ll share shortly. It had nothing to do with the school or the people (both were fantastic), but life had other plans for me.

The Reality of Job Searching

Another experience worth sharing: dealing with recruiters. Let me be blunt — I was exhausted by “headhunters” who seemed more like automated email senders than genuine career partners. Shallow LinkedIn searches and irrelevant offers became the norm.

That said, I also met a few outstanding professionals who took the time to understand my profile and present meaningful opportunities. My takeaway? Filter wisely. Don’t waste energy on those who haven’t read your CV.

Staying Visible Pays Off

If you visit my LinkedIn profile, you’ll see I stayed active — sharing insights, engaging with my network, keeping my brain connected to reality. That effort paid off. It kept me visible and opened the door to an amazing opportunity.

The countdown has started — in less than a month, I’ll begin a new position abroad. A new page in my story.

And here’s a lesson I learned the hard way: keeping your network alive matters. Posting relevant content regularly can make all the difference.

Making an Impact Through Move for Children

One highlight I cannot overlook is the incredible work done through Move for Children (#M4C). Together, we managed to raise significant funds for four amazing non-profit organizations — AEC, La Tramontane, La Mohinette, and La Chaise en Folie.

This success was made possible thanks to a fantastic charity lunch hosted at Un Max de Goût (proud holder of 1 Michelin star) and the unwavering support of De Vignes en Vignes. Their contribution and the generosity of our community allowed us to back impactful projects and make a real difference for children and families in need.

Health: Always the Priority

While career news is exciting, health remains my number one focus — and also my biggest challenge as I prepare for an international move.

Earlier this year, a foot infection (a harsh reminder of what diabetes can do) landed me in the hospital for three nights. Thankfully, I’m back on my feet and pushing forward. The support I’ve received during this time has been invaluable, and it reinforces one truth: taking care of yourself is non-negotiable.

What’s Next?

More changes are coming — big ones for me and my family. I’ll share more soon, but for now, know this: I’m ready for the next adventure, armed with lessons learned, a strong network, and renewed energy for what’s ahead.
