From Leukaemia and Stroke to Burnout
Life’s challenges have a way of accumulating, testing our strength and resilience. For me, it started with a leukaemia diagnosis, followed by a stroke. Now, I am facing burnout. It’s a daunting list that I hope won’t grow any longer.
One day, I woke up feeling unusually hypersensitive. Everything seemed to be amplified, and nothing felt right. I felt utterly useless, with an overwhelming sense of not achieving anything. Fatigue hit me hard, making even the simplest tasks seem like monumental efforts. It was clear: something was terribly wrong.
The Illusion of Recovery: Chapter 73
Chapter 73 of my story was supposed to mark a triumphant return to work, a signal that I was fit enough to dive back into the professional world. However, the reality was quite different. I was, unknowingly, barely keeping my head above water.
Then, in June, my father’s health deteriorated severely, necessitating a move to a retirement home where he could receive the support he needed. This left my mother alone and added another layer of responsibility as we took over her care and the associated administrative tasks.
With my mother living just across the street, we were able to manage, but it became glaringly obvious that I had jumped back into work too soon, and now, I was sinking.
Seeking Help: A Necessary Step
Realizing that I couldn’t go on like this, I started seeing a psychologist in March, with visits every two weeks. Initially, I had planned to return to work by April. But as the weeks passed, it became clear that this timeline was unrealistic.
Now, the plan is to stay off work until the end of August and then gradually ease back in. Recovery isn’t just about taking time off; it’s about building a sustainable path forward.
Building the Pillars of Recovery
Recovery from burnout is not a quick process. It requires time, patience, and a comprehensive approach. Here are the pillars I’m focusing on to rebuild my strength and resilience:
- Self-Care Routines: Prioritizing self-care activities has been crucial. This includes ensuring adequate sleep, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing. These practices help restore balance and build resilience.
- Setting Boundaries: Learning to say no and establishing clear boundaries both at work and in my personal life is essential. It prevents overcommitment and helps manage stress levels, allowing me to focus on what truly matters.
- Mindfulness and Stress Management: Practicing mindfulness helps me stay present and reduces anxiety. Developing effective stress management strategies, such as time management, prioritization, and problem-solving skills, is also essential in this journey.
- Seeking Support: Building a support network has been invaluable. Friends, family, and professionals offer emotional support and guidance, helping me feel less isolated and overwhelmed.
- Reconnecting with Passions and Purpose: Reflecting on my personal values, interests, and long-term goals has reignited my motivation. Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment outside of work is crucial for maintaining overall well-being.
Finding Solace in the Simple Things
One of the most therapeutic activities for me has been gardening. I’m fortunate to have a large garden full of flowers, plants, and yes, plenty of weeds. It’s a space where I can find peace and reconnect with nature.

I’ve also found great comfort in my new friend, Woody, who helps me keep my sugar levels in check and is a constant companion throughout my day.

The Importance of Family and Support
I am incredibly blessed to have the support of my family, my line manager, a coach, HR, my GP, and my psychologist. Their unwavering support has been a cornerstone in my recovery process. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in Oxford with my kids and their girlfriends, and it was a precious time of reconnection. Isabelle and I also enjoyed a weekend in Annecy, underscoring the importance of family time for emotional support and connection.

Moving Forward: A Path to Recovery
Navigating through burnout is a challenging and often overwhelming journey. It requires a lot of patience and support, but I am hopeful. By focusing on these pillars and with the support of my loved ones and professionals, I am confident that I can reclaim my well-being and continue on a path towards a fulfilling life.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Your support and understanding mean the world to me as I work towards recovery.

You are a very self aware human being Serge and that’s the first step to realize everything that’s mentioned in this post.
Very well articulated and clearly much needed 😀

Serge,
Full credit to your honesty and the way you are approaching this latest challenge. As a fellow (former) Shell employee, I am confident that the company will support your return timetable. Your work contribution has always been important-I see no reason why they would not welcome you back on a revised timetable.
I continue to enjoy the lovely writings you produce on restaurant visits, and I look forward to more.
Best wishes for success, Serge.
