A Not-So-Epicurean Adventure at L’Epicurien in Herve

Our latest culinary adventure took us to L’Epicurien in Herve, a spot recommended by a friend eager for new dining experiences. With a menu that promised intriguing combinations and a night out with good company, we ventured in with open minds and empty stomachs. However, our experience fell short of the high expectations set by the name.

First Impressions: Ambiance and Atmosphere

Walking into L’Epicurien, the first thing that strikes you is the noise. The room, simply decorated in white, lacked any specific ambiance, making it hard to distinguish the restaurant from a bustling brasserie. This initial impression set the tone for the evening – a place busy with chatter but missing a certain charm.

The Menu:

  • Appetisers (1)
  • Brined Veal Steak with BBQ Spices, Creamy Celery/Black Garlic Mayonnaise (2)
  • Just Stiffened Red Mullet and Cod/Squid Ink Crumble, Asparagus-Olive and Wakame/Sorrel Espuma Condiment (3)
  • Lamb, Duchess Potato, Cauliflower, Sweet Potato Puree and Its Juice (4)
  • Cheese Puff (5)
  • Belgian Strawberries and Hazelnut Granola / Airy Asparagus Cream (6)

The menu at L’Epicurien is undoubtedly ambitious, featuring a blend of ingredients designed to intrigue. However, the execution of a couple of dishes were left much to be desired.

The appetisers were tasty but not really fine and eleguant e.g. hard meatballs…

The brined veal steak was flavorful and not overpowered by the BBQ spices, making it a really great dish.

The red mullet and cod dish, though conceptually interesting, was a mixture of textures that didn’t quite harmonise with the sauce and made the result to be ok but no Woaw effect, for sure not memorable.

The lamb, a staple of bistronomy, was simply perfect, we all loved it.

Here comes what hurts, the “melted cheese” puff or spring roll whatever as the dough was hard (difficult to cut with a knife) and the Brie was too salty and there was no balance whatsoever in this small dish.

The dessert is somewhat special… if you try each ingredient separately it will taste like asparagus takes it all but if you take a bit of all of them at once, then you discover a real treat a dessert that will lead you somewhere else and could make you remember the experience.
I would strongly suggest the crew to sheer this information with the customers to avoid bad surprises.

Service: Efficient Yet Impersonal

One of the most notable aspects of our visit was the service – brisk and efficient, yet lacking warmth and personal interaction. Given the crowded dining room and what appeared to be an understaffed crew, it felt more like a brasserie than a restaurant aiming for a gastronomic experience. This straight-to-the-point approach left little room for engaging with the staff, a missed opportunity for adding a personal touch to the evening.

Overall Experience: Bistronomical but Not Quite Gastronomical

Despite the lack of ambiance and the hit-or-miss menu, we did enjoy our evening. The restaurant was full, indicating its popularity, and we were among the last to leave, a testament to a pleasant night spent with friends. However, L’Epicurien seems to straddle the line between bistronomy and gastronomy without fully committing to either.

For those with the right expectations – a decent meal at a reasonable price – L’Epicurien delivers. But for those seeking a truly memorable dining experience, it might fall short. Consistency is key here: you’ll leave neither disappointed nor particularly impressed. It’s a solid choice for a casual night out but not a destination for a special occasion.

Conclusion: Managing Expectations

L’Epicurien in Herve offers a reliable, if unremarkable, dining experience. The food is adequate, the service efficient, and the ambiance forgettable. It’s a place that meets the criteria of bistronomy but stops short of offering a true gastronomic adventure. For a night out with friends where the company is more important than the cuisine, L’Epicurien fits the bill. Just keep your expectations in check, and you’ll have a pleasant, if not extraordinary, evening.\
